From what I understand, there can be some hiccups for Mac users as far as getting it set up, but it is possible to use the two together with a bit of tweaking. After scooping this little beauty up from Wesley, I found the support from him and Paul Porter to be immensely helpful! I am using the printer with my laptop, which runs Windows 7 and I’m using the world’s most ancient copy of Photoshop 7.0. The printer works quite well with Photoshop, if you’re savvy with it and if not, it works rather well (perhaps even better?) with simple imaging software like Microsoft Paint or Publisher.

When I first plugged it in, Windows was able to locate and install the drivers automatically, which helps me a great deal, because I’m absolutely technologically inept. If your computer doesn’t find the drivers, it’s easy to download them from Brother’s support website and install them manually. Once that was done, I chose a random photograph to really get an idea of how serious this little printer actually was. I used a conversion technique recommended by Joshua Carlton to make the photo a bit more line drawing-y, but still maintained a reference photo kind of feel to it. I was blown away!! It’s literally like printing a portrait out and having a stencil/photo reference in one. Amazing.

Now, having a fantastic stencil is totally pointless if you can’t transfer it onto skin. So here’s where it became interesting. My gold standard for stencil application is 1) cleanse and disinfect skin 2) apply a dual layer of Stencil Stuff and let it get a bit tacky 3) let the stencil dry on the skin and 4) tattoo. Sometimes, if after a long time, the stencil starts fading or wearing off, I add a little ointment and it darkens it enough for me to plug on through. I normally use the purple thermofax paper from ReproFX (formerly known as SpiritMaster). What I found with this printer when using the purple spirit is that, with a highly pigmented stencil (portraits and such), you end up with a bit of a smeary purple mess when you start tattooing, even if you let the stencil dry for a significant amount of time. There is also a possibility of lighter pigments being tainted if you’re doing a color portrait. Additionally, I found that the gradients were not as well defined as I would have liked with the ability to get 300dpi out of the printer. So I turned to the invaluable advice of Paul Porter, who suggested I try the green spirit paper. I didn’t even know it came in green! I ordered some from Kingpin and tried out my random photo again. Un-freaking-believable. The gradients were smooth, well-defined and the stencil was so rich!! I put the stencil on the skin, using my old standby method. As soon as I wiped at the tattoo the first time, though, I realized that the stencil will wipe right off if you use Stencil Stuff with green spirit. The good news, however, is Paul and Wes have online forum to discuss issues, tips and techniques related to these fantastic printers and through it, I was able to come across some of the most amazing stencil transfer solutions I never knew existed!!
